4 Build a three-course wall of blocks between the two ponds, and incorporate vertical reinforcing rods in the blockwork. The water will flow from the top pool, over the wall into the pool below.

5 Lay plastic sheeting over the ground to protect tree roots from the cement, and then cover with wire mesh. Where the mesh overlaps, join with wire.

6 Mix concrete in batches in the ratio 1:3:3 cement:sand:stone, adding waterproofing agent according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Pour the concrete over the wire mesh, lifting the mesh to allow some of the concrete to seep under it. Smooth with a plasterer’s trowel as you work, and check and maintain the correct levels using a level. Once both ponds have been concreted, allow the mixture to set.
